There is a very graphic video posted here. This report is very disturbing. I am starting to get a bit upset over the fact that Obama has not made any kind of statement about this. What is he waiting for? This needs to be addressed immediately, especially after our illustrious present Commander in Chief has wiped his hands clean of this mess.

There was an excellent discussion on The News Hour last night. The upshot was that what Pres. Bush is calling a cease-fire is really an armistice. It seems that the US is demanding that peace terms be agreed to in advance of negotiations. Not the way to achieve lasting peace. I would hope that a true cease-fire be agreed to immediately to stop the suffering. Both “experts” in last night’s discussion thought Israel would continue its incursion for at least another 72 hours.
The reports today of attacks on UN-sponsored schools is certain to result in increased pressure on Israel by the international community — pressure they seem immune to at this point. I wonder how much more suffering the Gazans will be expected to absorb and at what long-term cost to the region. While I’m disappointed that PE Obama is remaining silent, I’m hopeful that it’s a signal that things will change post Jan. 20 — that a statement from him now would be at odds with Bush’s position.
MLTH,
I take the point that an Obama statement may be at odds now with Bush’s position, but my fear is that this will only help to foster more resentment towards us. He really needs to say something. I don’t know what.. but something.
I also read something similar to what you heard last night. It could have very well been about The News Hour. I came downstairs last night for a bit and just sat down for a few minutes to check more news ( yes I am obsessed). I wish I hadn’t because the images in that video really were so disturbing that I had a hard time falling asleep.
It seems that our media outlets are showing a completely different story, since they are not being let into Gaza at all, which in and of itself is disturbing. I want to think that there is some objectivity involved when you see videos like this, but it is hard to believe that it is possible.
Willpen,
I, too, am disturbed at the denial of access to Gaza by the Western media. I’m struck today by the comparison of the amount of damage to the UN-run school by the Israeli attack there and that typically rendered by the Katushas and Qassams. It goes once again to the issue of proportionality.
I caught the last part of an interview on NPR’s “World” yesterday of a US military man who will be going to Gaza to investigate possible human rights abuses. It seems that the rules of war are such that there is much room allowed for civilian casualties before there is the potential for questions. He indicated that any individual attack “allows” up to 30 civilian deaths without passing the threshold for investigation. It would be interesting to know the number of shells that have rained down on Gaza. And if one uses that same threshold, if the IDF statements of 6000-7000 rockets and mortars fired from Gaza into Israel are accurate, one can only wonder what the response might have been had there been 30 times that many civilian Israeli casualties.
I was heartened today to hear PE Obama address the civilian casualty question by expressing sympathy and concern. I’m not sure what more he can do at this point. Which makes me question Al Zawahiri’s statement placing blame on Obama for the events in Gaza. Guess he’s trying to get a jump on 1/20, but I can’t help but wonder if his audience is so unaware that Obama has limited influence and no power to change events at this point.
